CV

Carlo Caloro

Rome, 1962. Lives and works between Rome and Cologne.

Practice

His research presents itself as an exploration of various artistic idioms and of the stigmas attached to certain elements of the contemporary, translated by the artist into images: composite installations arising from personal reflections and the synthesis of studies conducted with methods often borrowed from humanistic and scientific traditions. Suspended between logical and abstract approaches, each work is a material and poetic experiment. His language engages new technologies as well as traditional craftsmanship and performative action.

Pre-academic experience

From the late 1980s he built leather masks and marionettes. In the early 1990s he organised in Rome the first international festival of animation theatre held in the city (documentation largely lost after two domestic burglaries and several relocations). In the same period he held a residency at the Marionetteatern Stockholm, then directed by Michael Meschke (UNIMA vice-president, founder of the theatre in 1958). In 1997 or 1998 he took part in a summer workshop within the European network eRENA / i3net (with ZKM Karlsruhe among partners) on Real Gesture / mixed reality.
