Atopia / 2002
The project Atopia (placelessness) is to be situated days. While in the one room two actors use a headset to follow previously determined actions that have been prescribed by a computer program, and are being filmed while doing this, the audience is in the next room. There they are only able to follow the action on a screen. As they watch, the audience is able to use a joystick the actors are. In this way, they may determine for but without having the actors directly before them. Thus on the one hand, the action lives by and from act of its reception. The active viewing, and hence, the conscious influence of the viewer with regard to the reception of art, is symbolized by the maneuvering of the joystick. In a further room with three monitors, the video recordings of a day are shown on one monitor each. In this way, Caloro subverts the unmi-stakable localizing of the action. By deconstructing the “logic of place-time-action”, the artist creates parallel realities. Jari Ortwig
