DERIVA

2024 — 2 hours per performance, 3 consecutive days 5 floating buoys, ropes, anchors First presented at: Maccarese beach, 26–28 September 2024, 4–6 pm

Five performers — Luca Della Corte, Loredana Canditone, Vera Borghini, Federica Dauri, Valentina Sansone — interact with five floating buoys placed along the shoreline and in the surf zone. The buoys move with the waves: they advance with the incoming wave, draw back as the water recedes, swing sideways with the currents. The performers observe the movement of the buoys and respond with their own bodies, following their shifts, accelerations and pauses. The choreography is not fixed in advance: it depends on the conditions of the sea at that moment — wave height, interval between one wave and the next, direction of the current. Each performance is different. The performers move on the wet sand, enter the shallow water, move away from the buoys and approach them again. The audience watches from the beach. Valentina Sansone is choreographic assistant. The performance is repeated for three consecutive days, at the same time of day.

Acentric regime — the buoys move with the waves; the performers respond to the movements of the buoys. The choreography depends on the conditions of the sea. Here the manipulator is the ocean, and the string is the chain of transmission wave → buoy → body, with no centre of command.
