2023 Wooden birdwatching panel, binoculars, speakers, directional microphone, wifi/bluetooth system Performer: two motionless performers First presented at: [to be defined]
A wooden birdwatching panel is placed in the space. Binoculars and speakers are mounted on the panel. Two performers stand motionless and observe everything that moves around them: branches, small fountains, insects, birds. The spectators look through the binoculars and follow the direction of the performers’ gaze; the performers point a directional microphone towards the source of movement and sound they have identified. The sound captured by the microphone reaches the speakers mounted on the panel. The spectator synchronises what they hear with what they see through the lenses. The immobility of the performers functions as a filter: only what moves in the surrounding environment becomes visible and audible. The panel replicates the structure of a birdwatching hide, where whoever is looking remains still and hidden. The directional microphone selects a portion of the sound space and isolates it from the rest. The spectator does not choose what to look at: they follow the point indicated by the performers and receive the corresponding sound.
Regime: [to be defined]. Here the apparatus — panel, binoculars, directional microphone, speakers — holds together the position of the spectator, the direction of the gaze and the sound source. The performers are motionless; only what moves in the environment passes through the device and reaches the viewer.
